Urgent Appeal: Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Flood Disaster Relief—Help Us Save Lives
Dear Donors,
We are a Disaster Relief service organization namely PALAM-NGO (People Awareness and Legal Aid Movement), have always been in the forefront for relief and rehabilitation work during and after natural calamities.
Catastrophic Flooding Strikes Andhra Pradesh and Telangana
From August 30 to September 3, 2024, a severe depression over the Bay of Bengal unleashed unprecedented rains, triggering widespread flooding across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. With an astonishing 520mm of rainfall in just 24 hours in Andhra, and heavy rains continuing in Telangana, the situation has become dire, with over 33 lives lost, hundreds displaced, and vast areas submerged.
Communities Devastated
Entire towns and villages, especially in Andhra's Guntur district and Telangana's Khammam district, have been ravaged by the floods. Roads, bridges, and vital infrastructure have been destroyed, isolating many communities. In Guntur, a family tragically lost their lives after being swept away by the floods. In Telangana, the Wyra river and Madhira lake overflowed, displacing thousands.
Government Efforts and the Need for Immediate Help
Despite the mobilization of 38 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and thousands of evacuees being sent to relief camps, the scale of the devastation is overwhelming. In addition to this, emergency services face constant challenges, including unresponsive emergency numbers, exploitation by private boat operators, and deteriorating conditions in flood-hit areas like Vijayawada.
Government resources are stretched to their limits. Relief efforts are ongoing, but the need for food, shelter, medical aid, and emergency supplies far exceeds what is available. This is where NGOs play a critical role. While the government is coordinating rescue and relief operations, NGOs like PALAM step in to provide immediate, on-the-ground assistance. NGOs can quickly distribute relief kits, arrange temporary shelters, and provide medical services where government agencies may be delayed.
